Jabber and Data Portability

by Florian Jensen

Today I discovered a very interesting initiative. It is about Data Portability.DP Logo

This might be the future for all websites and internet related applications. As a user, your profile, contacts, photos, videos and any other form of data is stored on the service providers servers. This means, for every website, you need to create a new login, invite all your friends manually to the service, upload your avatar and so on.

The next issue is, that you need to have some trust in the operator of the service, because he stores your password and other personal information.

Why shouldn’t it be possible to use a single login for everything? All your account data is stored and managed by yourself, so that the service providers don’t get hold of your personal information.

There have been some attempts in that direction, such as OpenID, but the Web needs alot more.

As mentioned above, your login, contacts, files should be portable from any service to another.

Jabber LightbulbAnd this is where Jabber comes in. I would like to be able to migrate my contacts from any Jabber Server to another. Instead of issuing re-invites to everyone, starting with a new roster, you should be able to transport all your data from any service provider to another.

But what about Identity theft? Isn’t that more dangerous if you have your own identity for every service? I.e. one E-mail adress gets hacked, and boom, you loose your identity?

Is this worthy of an XEP?

Think about it :)

Tell me what you think.

AOL adopting XMPP aka Jabber

by Florian Jensen

Proprietary protocols are things from yesterday. Today, Opensource technologies are taking over the world! AOL / ICQ has just launched a test server using XMPP, an open technology. This means that you’ll soon be able to talk to your ICQ / AIM contacts via Jabber. Google has already started using it. So who’s next? MSN!

AOL seems to be making its ICQ and AIM services compatible with XMPP: xmpp.oscar.aol.com PS: it’s still buggy and is only claimed to work in Exodus and Coccinella. It works in nearly all Jabber clients. But that is probably because the server is overloaded.

There has been a vivid discussion today on the Jdev MUC room about this. It looks like Jabber will be the solution which will rule the future of all messengers.

You can try to log in to ICQ with the username icqnumber@aol.com on server xmpp.oscar.aol.com on port 5222. TLS is required.

Let’s see what happens in the next few months with Jabber.

You can find Jabber Hosting for your Domain on Flosoft.biz . You’ll probably be able to chat to your ICQ contacts soon!

UPDATE: AIM seems to work too!

UPDATE2: There is a tutorial here on how to setup your Jabber Client

UPDATE3: I just recieved this picture from jjkobra. It works with Gajim! AOL adopting XMPP aka Jabber

UPDATE4: It seems to work in Psi too!

UPDATE5: A comment by AOL.

FlorianJensen.com now with SSL!

by Florian Jensen

Hey,

I just setup my SSL Certificate on this host, and updated my WordPress to use it. It’s a really nice certificate. Especially, for 19.99€ / year a Class2 Certificate and an additional IP is a great deal.

Website SSL1Not alot has changed at first sight. There is a new logo, but when you take a closer look, you will see that there is a Lock at the top, and the adressbar is yellow. Then there is also a lock at the bottom right. Both these locks indicate that the site is completely secure.

Website SSL2When you click on the lock, you get this information window, which states that the Website is secure and that it is a high-grade encryption. Only the best for my visitors! :)

Website SSL3The last window simply shows you all the information about the site owner, me!

As FlorianJensen.com now has an Exclusive IP, new site features will be available soon. The Store is currently being redone, but once it is ready, it will have alot of new features. Personally I encourage every site admin to get an SSL Certificate, as it is simply more secure, and you wouldn’t want to have your Network Administrator to see what you do. :) That is why I even use an OpenVPN Connection when I am in public places. A good example is MSN. With a small tool like Wireshark, you can very easially capture all the data which is sent by MSN on the network. As this traffic is unencrypted, there is no problem for third-parties to read it. So use Jabber!

E61 – The best mobile phone EVER!

by Florian Jensen

Hey,

yesterday I acquired an Nokia E61, which turned out to be one of the best investments I ever did.

My E61! My E61 … again!

It’s a great mobile phone. You can install a ton of applications, and it has WiFi. Here is a small list of the things I currently do with it:

E-mailing

I have setup my E-mail account on it, using IMAP. It even supports IMAP IDLE, which is a really great feature if you have to pay for the data connection traffic. I use my WiFi mostly though, so I don’t really care.

My E-mails

Jabber-ing

I installed Talkonaut 3.0, which is a great Jabber client for Symbian OS. It supports alot of features, such as File Transfer and Jingle Audio. The key feature though is, that it supports data compression. This is very nice if you use it via 3G.

Talkonaut 1 Talkonaut 2 Talkonaut 3

As you can see on the last screenshot, Jabber is the perfect IM Platform. Thanks to Jabber data compression, you can chat for nearly nothing using GPRS or 3G! That was actually the result of 1 day chatting.

Vodafone Live! and Proximus Mobile TV

You’re bored? Well just go onto the Vodafone Live! portal and watch TV on your E61! The screen is big enough, and it is quite cheap. Just 0,49€ per session. You have a choice of 30 live TV stations and alot of on demand content. I just watched the Looney Tunes! Great fun.

VoIP!

I call quite alot to foreign countries, which leads to a very high phone bill. But now I can call via my VoipStunt account on my Mobile Phone. The quality is as good as via the GSM Network. All that routed via WiFi means that you don’t pay anything for the calls. If you want, you can also call via VoIP over the 3G network. Haven’t tried that yet, but I will in a bit. Atleast VoIP calls via WiFi are that good quality, that you don’t notice any difference! And it is integrated seamlessly into the general OS.

A Keyboard!

You actually have a nice Keyboard on the E61. I hate writing SMS with these numbers, like on the normal GSMs. Now I have a full keyboard on it. Very easy to type. Even with my fingers.

A really good Webbrowser

There actually is a very good webbrowser on the E61. It’s based on Webkit, and even runs complicated JS. It’s very nice to browse the Web from your mobile phone.

E61 Webbrowser

As you can see, it displays perfectly!

iPod Video without stupid iTunes.

I wanted an MP3 player with Video support. That was why I was thinking of getting an iPhone, but that is not available in Belgium at the moment. A hacked one, would be a possibility, but it’s also quite expensive. But now, with the E61, I have a MP3, OGG Player and Video Player.

Music Video

As you can see, I still love The Simpsons :) I need to tweak my encoding quality though, as in Fullscreen it isn’t that nice.

Google Maps & GPS

I also installed Google Maps on the E61. It is a really great app. The next thing I am going to buy, is a TomTom GPS adapter, so that I can use it in my car as a GPS.

Google Maps

What other application would you like to see on your Mobile phone? For me, I have everything I want on my E61. I can just recommend it.
